The beginning of August brought reformed family leave
Family leave was reformed on 1 August, when the number of parental leave days increased, and the use of leave became more flexible.
As a rule, the new parental leave will apply to children whose expected date of birth is on or after 4 September 2022. The aim of the reform is to increase equality at work and between parents, and to better account for different types of families.
An employee’s right to family leave is based on the Employment Contracts Act. However, under the same act, the employer is not required to pay wages for the duration of family leave. In the public sector and universities, the family leave reform has been negotiated into the collective agreements; in the private sector this work is still badly incomplete.
