The career services manager of Loimu commented on the employment of PhDs on Yle News

On Tuesday, January 7th, Yle News published an article titled “It’s pretty intense if you can’t find a job with this level of expertise,” discussing the employment of PhDs.

“A doctoral degree trains you to be a researcher, but only a third find employment in universities. The next largest employers are companies and municipalities.

Companies could make better use of the expertise of PhDs, thinks Suvi Liikkanen, Career Services Manager at Loimu.

According to Liikkanen, the problem is that companies do not always recognize the generally useful skills of PhDs, and on the other hand, PhDs do not always know how to highlight them.

Companies often want skills in project management and people management, which are not directly taught in doctoral programs.”
